This year we grew corn for the first time. The stalks shot up quickly — surprisingly quickly, to a family that’s never watched corn grow. And then, what seems so much like a food of the farm country was suddenly ready for harvesting in our little city garden.
We only planted five plants this season. Next season we’ll plant more, for sure. Of the three cobs we harvested yesterday, 1 had shriveled kernels, and 2 were perfect for eating.
We pulled back the husks, plucked out the silk, basted the corn with oil, salt and pepper, and put it on the grill. Our first corn harvest ever tasted amazing – sweet, smoky corn.
